In recent years, Gen Z has discovered a newfound passion for birding, providing a refreshing alternative to social media scrolling. According to the British Trust for Ornithology, Britain has experienced a loss of 73 million wild birds over the past 50 years, driven by habitat destruction, pesticide use, disease, and climate change. This alarming decline may be difficult for younger generations to grasp due to a phenomenon known as ‘shifting baseline syndrome’.
Understanding the Decline of Bird Populations
The dramatic loss of bird species in Britain can be attributed to several factors:
- Habitat loss: Urbanization and agricultural expansion have severely impacted natural habitats.
- Pesticides: Chemical use in farming has detrimental effects on bird populations.
- Climate crisis: Changing weather patterns disrupt migratory patterns and breeding habitats.
As Robert Macfarlane, a prominent writer on nature, explains, “Each generation inherits a degraded version of the environment.” This makes it challenging for young people to fully appreciate the extent of biodiversity loss.
Social Media's Role in Popularizing Birdwatching
Despite these challenges, birdwatching has gained popularity among Gen Z, largely due to platforms like Instagram and the Merlin Bird ID app. These tools have made bird identification and appreciation more accessible and engaging.
