On July 2, 2026, Gaza authorities reported that more than 90% of the Gaza Strip has been destroyed, with Israeli forces controlling 80% of the territory. This marks 1,000 days since the onset of the conflict that began on October 7, 2023. The Government Media Office of Gaza stated that at least 73,066 Palestinians have been killed, including over 21,500 children.
Devastation and Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
The ongoing conflict has led to a staggering humanitarian crisis. Authorities indicate that 9,500 people remain missing, many believed to be trapped under rubble. Furthermore, 173,514 individuals have sustained injuries during the war. The scale of destruction has resulted in an estimated 68 million tonnes of rubble, with less than 0.5% cleared to date.
“We lost about 85% to 90% of our resources, our buildings, and our infrastructure,” said Yahya al-Sarraj, Gaza City Mayor. He highlighted the dire situation, stating that nearly 400,000 people are surviving on just one meal a day.
Ceasefire Efforts and International Response
The framework for a ceasefire established by the US-created Board of Peace is faltering, as Israeli compliance remains elusive. Analysts point out that the board's purpose has deviated from its original mission of unifying Gaza and the West Bank. “There are no shared policies or even a shared vision,” said analyst Iyad Jouda.
