The Fundación Kahlo, a New York–based nonprofit founded by the family of iconic painter Frida Kahlo, has launched the Kahlo Art Prize to support emerging Mexican artists. This biennial prize, underwritten by the auction house Phillips, includes a $50,000 stipend and opportunities for the winner's work to be exhibited in Mexico City at the Museo Casa Kahlo. The inaugural winner will be announced on July 6, 2027, coinciding with the 120th anniversary of Kahlo’s birth.
Kahlo Art Prize Details and Selection Process
The Kahlo Art Prize is set to be awarded every other year, with submissions opening in November. The prize is exclusively available to Mexican nationals and will focus on two-dimensional works for its first year. The selection process will be conducted through an open-call format, allowing artists to submit their entries.
According to Mara Romeo Kahlo, Frida Kahlo’s grandniece and president of the Fundación Kahlo, the prize aims to elevate and celebrate other artists, reflecting Frida's lifelong commitment to teaching and supporting emerging voices in the arts.
Significance of Frida Kahlo's Legacy
Frida Kahlo’s influence continues to resonate in the art world, as noted by Miety Heiden, chairman of private sales at Phillips. He stated, “Few artists have had the lasting impact of Frida Kahlo. Generations after her lifetime, her work continues to shape cultural conversations and inspire new artistic voices.” This prize is designed to further that legacy by providing a platform for new talent.
