Former NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson has warned that the next UK Prime Minister must urgently address the growing threat of war. Speaking on July 7, 2026, he emphasized the need for increased defence spending as the UK prepares for a crucial NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.
Concerns Over Defence Spending Delays
Lord Robertson expressed that Britain's NATO allies are "disturbed" by the delays in the UK government's defence investment plans. He described these plans as "unconvincing," noting that the £15 billion increase in military spending proposed by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer over the next four years may not be sufficient.
During the upcoming NATO summit, which President Donald Trump will attend, Sir Keir is likely to face pressure to accelerate defence funding. Lord Robertson criticized the current defence investment plan, stating that it has caused confusion within the Ministry of Defence and has unsettled the defence industry.
The Growing Threat of War
In his remarks, Lord Robertson highlighted that the challenge of increasing military funding to counter threats facing the UK is now more urgent than previously anticipated. He stated, "We are under daily attack at the present moment and that will be ramped up." He also warned of a potential Russian attack on NATO by 2030.
