Folarin Balogun is eligible to play for the US national team in their World Cup last-16 match against Belgium on Monday night, following FIFA's decision to rescind his red card suspension. This announcement, made earlier on Sunday, comes after significant lobbying from former US President Donald Trump.
Trump's Intervention and FIFA's Decision
Balogun, who has scored three goals in this World Cup, received a red card during the US team's victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. In response to the suspension, Trump made three calls to FIFA, starting on Wednesday, urging them to reconsider the ban. His efforts ultimately led to FIFA's announcement that Balogun would be available for the crucial match in Seattle.
“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform. FIFA's disciplinary committee cited Article 27 of their disciplinary code, which allows for the suspension of red cards not related to match-fixing, as the basis for their decision.
Impact on the US Team
The lifting of Balogun's suspension is a significant boost for the US as they aim to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2002. Balogun has been instrumental in the US’s attack, consistently posing a threat to opposing defenses. The team was informed of his eligibility while on the bus to training, creating a mix of surprise and excitement among the players.
Defender Chris Richards recounted the moment: “Some guys are playing Clash Royale, some guys were just in the back listening to music, and then think somewhere in between that, we heard all the reports.” The confirmation from a US Soccer official came shortly after initial social media reports, ensuring the team was prepared for his return.
