A new state law in Florida, known as HB 1217, bans local governments from pursuing net-zero emissions goals. This legislation, enacted to limit greenhouse gas emissions, was introduced amidst rising concerns over climate change and its impact on natural disasters, including hurricanes. Cities like Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, and Leon County had already implemented such policies before the law's passage.
Impact of the New Law on Local Policies
Despite the new restrictions, experts believe that existing policies may not be immediately overturned. Bradley Marshall, a senior attorney at Earthjustice, stated, “It’s certainly meant to scare municipalities and local governments from trying to do things to further net-zero policies.” He emphasized that the law's precise implications are still under discussion.
Marshall added that related policies aimed at emissions reductions and climate change mitigation may not be affected directly by the ban on adopting a net-zero policy. This leaves room for local governments to explore alternative strategies.
