Flooding from Tropical Storm Maysak has claimed the lives of 39 people in Nanning, southern China, following a catastrophic dam breach on July 6, 2026. The city's vice mayor, Ding Wei, announced the updated toll during a news briefing on Thursday, revealing a sharp increase from an earlier count of six fatalities.
Catastrophic Dam Breach and Record Rainfall
The dam breach in Nanning resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, with torrential rains inundating the region. Record rainfall, ranging from 10-40cm (4-16in) in some areas, and exceeding 90cm (35in) in severely affected locations, led to the disaster, according to the national meteorological center.
The heavy rains persisted for days, breaching reservoirs and unleashing torrents of water through towns and cities in the Guangxi region. In response to the crisis, approximately 130,000 people have been evacuated, and rescue operations are underway.
Rescue Operations and Community Response
In a massive relief effort, more than 8,000 rescue personnel and about 5,700 boats have been deployed to assist those trapped by the rising waters. Rescuers are facing strong currents and debris as they work tirelessly to reach victims.
