Flash flooding in Missouri on Friday resulted in the tragic death of one woman and the rescue of over 200 campers. Faith Gregory was found deceased after her home was swept away by heavy rainfall in Crawford County, approximately 70 miles south-west of St. Louis. The flooding prompted numerous emergency evacuations and rescues, particularly at a summer camp in Lesterville.
Details of the Flooding Incident
On Friday, thunderstorms unleashed severe rainfall across Missouri, leading to flash flood warnings issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). The body of Faith Gregory was discovered about 1.8 miles downstream from her home, which was destroyed by the floods. The sheriff's office expressed condolences, stating, “This is not the outcome that any of us were hoping for.”
Emergency services conducted extensive rescues, including the evacuation of over 200 children and staff from Camp Taum Sauk. The Army National Guard utilized Black Hawk helicopters to transport them to safety. The camp expressed gratitude on social media, stating, “We are beyond thankful for your help keeping our camp community safe.”
Ongoing Weather Threats and Warnings
The NWS warned that the severe weather could extend beyond Missouri, affecting areas from the Ozark Mountains to the Ohio and Tennessee river valleys. Damaging winds and additional rainfall were anticipated, with some regions already experiencing 6 to 12 inches of rain. As the storms progressed southward, the potential for more flash flooding remained a concern.
