A new crowdsourced platform called FLARE-AI has been launched by AI researchers to report and track harmful AI behaviors. This initiative aims to address the increasing incidents of AI systems behaving unpredictably, allowing users to alert developers and organizations about potential issues. The platform was announced on October 13, 2023, as a solution to the fragmented reporting mechanisms currently in place.
Understanding FLARE-AI's Purpose and Features
FLARE-AI serves as a centralized system where users can report various AI-related problems, from chatbots generating malware to those leaking personal data. The system's open-source code enables verification of reported issues, ensuring transparency and accountability among AI developers. According to Avijit Ghosh, an AI policy researcher at HuggingFace, "Right now, there is no centralized, accountable way to report flaws in AI systems."
This initiative is particularly timely, given the rise of agentic AI systems that pose greater risks. The platform aims to streamline reporting and improve the safety of AI applications, thus fostering a more responsible development environment.
Collaboration with Experts and Legislative Support
FLARE-AI was developed with input from 49 AI experts across 32 different organizations, highlighting the collaborative effort to address AI misbehavior. The researchers have also consulted on a congressional bill introduced in June that seeks to formalize the reporting of AI flaws. This legislation would empower the National Institute of Standards and Technology to establish standards for AI flaw reporting.
