Fifa has publicly criticized Uefa for its stance on the controversial decision regarding Folarin Balogun’s suspension. In a statement released before the USA's last-16 match against Belgium, Fifa’s disciplinary committee chair, Mohammad al-Kamali, defended the lifting of Balogun's ban, describing it as a standard disciplinary measure.
Fifa's Defense of Balogun's Suspension Lifting
Fifa stated that the overturning of red cards is a common practice in leagues affiliated with Uefa. “The overturning of red cards is a common disciplinary measure,” Fifa emphasized, noting that this has never previously raised concerns about crossing any 'red line'. This comes in response to Uefa's claims that Fifa's decision undermined the integrity of the World Cup.
Uefa had condemned the decision, asserting that allowing Balogun to play against Belgium contradicted the competition's rules, which mandate an automatic one-match suspension for red cards. The statement from Fifa clarified that while the red card itself was not overturned, the effects of the suspension have been temporarily lifted.
Political Pressure and Uefa's Reaction
The controversial reprieve for Balogun followed lobbying from former President Donald Trump and senior White House officials. Trump publicly stated that he urged Fifa President Gianni Infantino to review the suspension. Infantino later claimed he was unaware of the disciplinary committee's decision until it was announced, asserting his independence from the process.
