FIFA Greenlights Rainbow Flags at Pride Match
In a significant move for LGBTQ+ visibility, FIFA has announced that rainbow flags will be permitted at the upcoming World Cup match between Egypt and Iran in Seattle. This match, dubbed the 'Pride Match', coincides with Seattle's annual Pride weekend celebrations.
LGBTQ+ Celebrations Surrounding the Match
The organizing committee in Seattle has planned a series of festivities to honor the LGBTQ+ community. However, both teams have shown an unwillingness to engage in discussions about the Pride celebrations, focusing solely on the game itself. Iran's coach, Amir Ghalenoei, emphasized that his team's priority is football, stating, "We are here to talk about the match and tactics, not about anything that is banned in our league."
Controversy and Complaints
Despite FIFA's approval, both the Iranian and Egyptian football federations expressed their discontent regarding the LGBTQ+ events surrounding the match. They have formally requested that FIFA cancel these celebrations. In Iran, LGBTQ+ relationships are criminalized, and Egypt has a documented history of prosecuting individuals for their sexual orientation or gender identity.
