Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s chief executive of AGI deployment, is stepping down from her full-time role and will transition to a part-time adviser position, as announced on Thursday. This decision follows a months-long medical leave due to a worsening neuroimmune condition. Simo revealed in a post on X that her recovery journey has become more complex than anticipated, prompting her to focus on her health.
Health Challenges Prompt Leadership Change at OpenAI
In her announcement, Simo shared, “Three months ago, I had to go on medical leave after a severe exacerbation of a chronic illness I’ve lived with for seven years.” She emphasized the importance of prioritizing her health after postponing medical tests and therapies to fulfill her professional obligations.
Previously, Simo joined OpenAI’s board of directors in March 2024 and was appointed by CEO Sam Altman to oversee product and business organizations. This allowed Altman to concentrate on research and the expansion of the company's data center.
OpenAI's Organizational Changes Amid Executive Shakeup
Following Simo’s temporary departure, OpenAI has undergone significant restructuring. The company’s former COO, Brad Lightcap, has transitioned to a role focused on special projects, while OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman has taken on product strategy responsibilities. The company has merged its product teams to streamline operations and is preparing for an expected IPO in 2027, targeting a valuation of $1 trillion.
