Father Dionysios Tabakis, a Greek Orthodox priest, is redefining musical boundaries with his album Paradise Metal, which blends doom metal, Christmas carols, and religious dubstep. Released earlier this year, the album has garnered significant attention, even receiving a 7.6 rating from Pitchfork, surpassing renowned artists like Aphex Twin and Daft Punk.
Father Tabakis and His Musical Journey
Residing in Nafplio, Greece, Father Tabakis, 53, has a unique perspective on music and faith. He believes that “The guitar was made by God” and aims to change the perception of electric guitars within the church, which traditionally views them as instruments of the devil. His journey into music began in childhood, influenced by the rich Byzantine culture surrounding him.
Growing up in a poor household in the port of Piraeus, Father Tabakis was introduced to Byzantine music by local priests. He taught himself various traditional instruments, including the cümbüş and yayli tanbur. His eclectic musical background laid the foundation for his later work, which combines various genres.
Paradise Metal: A Unique Sound
Released in April, Paradise Metal features a distinctive sound that merges heavy metal with elements of rap and techno, a reflection of Father Tabakis's diverse musical influences. The album's lead track, “Techno in a Monastery”, opens with a call to action: “Are you ready?”, before transitioning into rhythmic chanting over a synth-heavy beat.
