On September 6, Saxony-Anhalt will face a crucial state election as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party threatens the region's energy transition. Hannes Loth, the first full-time AfD mayor of Raguhn-Jeßnitz, is advocating for renewable energy projects despite the party's contrary policies.
AfD's Renewable Energy Plans in Saxony-Anhalt
Hannes Loth, elected in 2023, aims to construct a battery storage facility and six wind turbines in his municipality. Local councilor Tilo Hörtzsch from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) supports Loth's initiatives, stating, "We need these key technologies in Saxony-Anhalt — they're important." This push for renewable energy, however, is at odds with the AfD's official stance.
The AfD's election manifesto includes plans to halt the coal phase-out and end energy sanctions against Russia, raising concerns about a potential reversal of energy policies in the state. With current polling showing the AfD at 41% and the CDU at 26%, fears grow that the party could significantly influence energy policy.
Impact of AfD Policies on Energy Transition
The paradox of Saxony-Anhalt lies in its status as a leader in renewable energy while simultaneously witnessing the AfD's electoral gains. According to Roland Abold, managing director of infratest dimap, economic factors are less influential in the voting decisions of AfD supporters, who prioritize issues like immigration and education.
