The fanfiction community is grappling with a significant divide over the use of AI-generated works, as readers and writers seek to identify authors who utilize generative AI tools. This movement gained traction on June 29, 2026, with the launch of a detection tool aimed at flagging AI-assisted writing on the popular fanfic repository, Archive of Our Own (AO3).
AI Detection Tool Sparks Controversy
An anonymous account on X, known as @heatedrivalryai, introduced a skin designed to highlight text generated by Anthropic’s Claude AI. The tool claims to identify AI-generated content by detecting specific coding artifacts left by Claude. When users paste text from Claude into AO3, the background turns red, signaling the use of AI. This visual cue has raised concerns among fanfiction writers and readers alike.
Despite the tool's intention to foster transparency, it has led to public shaming of flagged writers within the community. The creator of the detection tool emphasized that their aim was not to instigate mistrust but to protect the integrity of fanfiction as a collaborative and human-centered art form. They stated, "Fandom is a uniquely connective, collaborative space. It thrives on the human element and the creative spark which drives it and feeds off it."
Limitations and Risks of AI Detection
While the detection skin appears effective in identifying Claude-generated text, it has notable limitations. The code artifacts are only preserved when text is copied directly from Claude into AO3. This means that works edited in programs like Google Docs or Microsoft Word may evade detection entirely. As a result, many fanfic writers have already revised their pieces to remove any trace of AI involvement.
