The family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a man fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas, is demanding an investigation into the incident. This tragedy occurred on July 7, 2026, amid heightened scrutiny of immigration enforcement actions under the Trump administration.
Details of the Incident
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Salgado Araujo allegedly attempted to ram an ICE agent's vehicle, prompting the agent to open fire. The family refutes this claim, stating that Salgado Araujo was simply driving a crew to a work site and may have feared theft from the unmarked vehicles.
Ronaldo Salgado, Salgado Araujo's son, expressed his grief at a news conference, emphasizing, "He did not deserve to die. He deserved to live a quiet life as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a husband, a father, and a job creator for dozens of men who also wanted the American dream." Salgado Araujo had lived in the U.S. for 35 years, had no criminal record, and was working towards legal status.
Reactions from Advocacy Groups
Advocacy groups have criticized the ICE's methods, claiming that they create an environment where it feels like “open season on Latinos.” Roman Palomares, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, stated, "officers think they can shoot and explain later." The incident has sparked calls for immediate reforms within immigration enforcement.
