In the latest Yale University environmental performance index, released in 2024, Estonia ranks first among 177 assessed countries for its efforts to combat pollution and protect ecosystems. The index highlights significant strides made by European nations, with Luxembourg and the UK following closely in second and third place, respectively. Meanwhile, the United States has slipped to 27th position, reflecting a concerning trend in climate action.
Top Performers in Climate Action
The biennial Yale index evaluates countries based on 47 environmental indicators, assessing their success in reducing air and water toxins, as well as the sustainability of their forests and fisheries. The latest report indicates that Estonia has made commendable progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, establishing itself as a leader in environmental policy.
Following Estonia, Luxembourg has implemented robust measures to tackle pollution, while the UK has improved its ranking from fifth to third by enhancing biodiversity protection and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The performance of these countries showcases the effectiveness of sustained environmental policies.
Global Climate Challenges Persist
Despite advancements in various regions, the report underscores a troubling lack of progress in addressing the climate crisis globally. The Yale index notes that while there have been long-term reductions in environmental hazards, many countries are still lagging in meeting net zero emissions commitments. The urgency of the climate threat is further emphasized by recent deadly heatwaves in Europe and the US.
