On Friday, EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis met with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao in Brussels to address the growing trade imbalance between the European Union and China. This meeting comes as the EU seeks to limit the influx of Chinese imports, which poses risks to European industries and raises fears of deindustrialization.
EU's Strategy to Address Trade Imbalance
The EU has expressed concerns over the significant trade deficit with China, which reached approximately €400 billion last year. In response, the bloc is exploring measures to protect its industries from overwhelming competition and potential job losses.
Commissioner Dombrovskis stated, “We need to ensure that our businesses can compete on a level playing field.” The EU aims to implement policies that could include tariffs on certain imports and improved trade regulations.
Impact on European Industries
The influx of cheap Chinese goods has been cited as a major factor in the deindustrialization of several European sectors. Industries such as textiles, electronics, and machinery have felt the pressure, leading to factory closures and job losses.
