On Saturday, the town of Bryne will gather to celebrate local hero Erling Haaland as Norway faces England in the World Cup quarter-finals. The small farming town near Stavanger has embraced Haaland's rise to stardom, with local businesses showcasing merchandise and community events planned for the match.
Haaland's Impact on Bryne
Erling Haaland, the 6ft 4in Manchester City striker, has become a symbol of pride for Bryne. According to Andreas Vollusund, the town’s mayor and Haaland's former schoolteacher, “We are proud of the little boy who has grown into a huge Viking.” This sentiment is echoed by many residents who feel that his success has put Bryne on the map.
Local shops have reported a surge in demand for Haaland merchandise, with items selling out rapidly. “It’s been pure joy,” said Olinda Haaland, who runs a fabric shop in the central square. “We all love him so much and he’s doing so much for Bryne.”
Community Celebrations and Events
The town is preparing for a large outdoor screening of the match, where up to 3,000 children and families are expected to attend. Mayor Vollusund will serve hotdogs at the event, which aims to foster community spirit and encourage local youth to engage with sports.
