Environmentalists and immigrant-rights advocates are calling for an independent investigation into the environmental damage caused by the Alligator Alcatraz migrant detention center. This demand was made on Friday during a news conference held outside the now-closed facility. The Friends of the Everglades (FOE) executive director, Eve Samples, labeled the detention center as a “failure, an obscene waste of taxpayer dollars and an abuse of the Everglades.”
Closure of Alligator Alcatraz and Environmental Concerns
The Alligator Alcatraz migrant detention center operated for 12 months before its closure, drawing significant criticism from environmental groups. These organizations argue that the facility's operations have left lasting impacts on the surrounding wilderness of the Everglades.
During the news conference, advocates emphasized the need for accountability regarding the environmental degradation that occurred. They believe that a thorough investigation is crucial to understand the extent of the damage inflicted on this vital ecosystem.
