Emmanuel Macron arrived in Damascus on Monday evening, becoming the first leader of an EU member state to visit Syria since the fall of Bashar Assad in December 2024. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani welcomed Macron and his Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot at the airport, where Macron expressed France's commitment to a sovereign and peaceful Syria.
Significance of Macron's Visit
Macron's visit is seen as a pivotal moment in restoring Syria's international standing, with Syria's state news agency SANA calling it a crucial step. President Ahmed al-Sharaa aims to reboot Syria's international credentials following the power shift after over a decade of civil conflict.
In May 2025, Macron hosted al-Sharaa during his first official visit to an EU country, which preceded al-Sharaa's subsequent meetings in Berlin and Washington. Given al-Sharaa's controversial past as a leader of the al-Nusra Front, which was subject to extensive sanctions, Macron's support for lifting these sanctions indicates a significant shift in Western relations with the new Syrian government.
Current Situation in Syria
Despite improvements, the security situation in Syria remains precarious. Recently, a bomb blast in Damascus resulted in 10 fatalities, and ongoing violence against religious minorities has been attributed to Islamic State militants. The relationship between the government and Kurdish forces continues to be strained, with past conflicts still fresh in memory.
