On July 1, 2026, Elon Musk publicly denied a report claiming that SpaceX showcased an AI phone prototype to investors. The report, published by The Wall Street Journal, described a device that was purportedly slimmer than an iPhone and suggested it would run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip.
Details of the Alleged SpaceX AI Phone Prototype
The Wall Street Journal reported that SpaceX presented a 'handset-like prototype' to select investors ahead of its record-breaking initial public offering (IPO) in June. The device was said to feature an AI-enabled operating system powered by xAI, a company owned by SpaceX.
Despite earlier speculation, Musk stated, "The idea of making a phone makes me want to die," but acknowledged that if necessary, SpaceX would consider it. This contradicts previous statements where he asserted that the company was not developing a phone.
SpaceX's Mobile Service Considerations
Recent discussions among investors revealed that Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's chief operating officer, indicated the company is exploring launching a mobile service in the United States. This service would connect to the Starlink satellite network, which is currently SpaceX's only profitable venture.
