The Egyptian Football Association (FA) has questioned the fairness of their national team’s 3-2 defeat to Argentina during the World Cup last-16 match on Tuesday in Atlanta. Despite an early lead from Yasser Ibrahim, Egypt faced controversial officiating that led to their exit from the tournament.
Refereeing Controversies During the Match
Egypt initially took the lead with a goal from Yasser Ibrahim, but their second goal by Mostafa Ziko was disallowed after a foul was called in the buildup. Referee François Letexier reviewed the play, resulting in significant discontent among the Egyptian players.
As the match progressed, Ziko managed to score again, bringing the score to 2-0. However, Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi quickly equalized for Argentina. The match took a dramatic turn when Letexier refused to award a penalty for a challenge on Mohamed Salah late in the game, culminating in a last-minute winner from Enzo Fernández.
Egypt's Reaction to the Officiating
Following the match, Egypt's manager Hossam Hassan expressed his frustration, stating, “What happened was unfair. Egypt deserved to qualify. We were the better team.” The Egyptian FA issued a statement condemning the officiating, emphasizing the need for integrity and fairness in match officiating.
