Egypt’s national football team was greeted with a hero’s welcome on Friday in el-Alamein, following their best World Cup performance to date. The team exited the tournament in the last 16 after a thrilling match against Argentina, which ended in a 3-2 comeback loss. Hundreds of fans celebrated the team’s achievements outside the airport, showcasing their pride and joy.
Fans Celebrate Historic World Cup Journey
A vibrant crowd filled the airport grounds, waving Egyptian and Palestinian flags as they awaited the arrival of their heroes. Supporter Mohamed Gehad expressed his excitement, stating, “We are very happy with the team. Their spirit was high, and ours is high as we welcome them.” The players were greeted with cheers and applause as they boarded an open-top bus for a parade through the city.
During the tournament, Egypt achieved their first World Cup win, defeating Australia on penalties, and reached the knockout stage for the first time. Fans remained optimistic despite the dramatic loss to Argentina, where Egypt led 2-0 until the final minutes. Eyad Ahmed, another supporter, shared, “They reached a stage they had never reached before, and we are proud of them.”
Mohamed Salah's Vision for Egyptian Football
As the bus pulled away, team captain Mohamed Salah took to social media, stating, “I’ll do everything in my power to ensure this is a new beginning for Egyptian football on the international stage.” The players are set to meet with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who praised their “honourable performance” in a social media post.
