The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has officially requested FIFA to remove the officials involved in their World Cup last-16 defeat against Argentina on July 8, 2026. The EFA filed a complaint citing "double standards" in officiating during the match held in Atlanta, where Egypt was eliminated after a controversial 3-2 loss.
Controversial VAR Decisions in the Match
During the game, Egypt was leading 1-0 when a goal by Mostafa Zico was ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR). The decision came after Egypt midfielder Marwan Attia was penalized for stepping on Lisandro Martinez's foot, which initiated the play. Additionally, Egypt believed that Mohamed Salah was fouled in the penalty area shortly before Argentina scored the stoppage-time winner.
The EFA's president, Hany Abou Rida, expressed deep dissatisfaction with the officiating, stating, "We demand an investigation into the serious refereeing mistakes committed by the team of referees and double standards, which caused the Egypt team to lose the match and leave the World Cup." The federation is urging the exclusion of the referee and his crew pending an investigation.
Accusations of Discrimination Against Egypt
The EFA claimed that the officiating errors constituted a "crime of discrimination against the Egyptian national team." Historically, Egypt has never reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup, intensifying the emotional response following this controversial exit.
