A US court has ordered writer E. Jean Carroll to be paid $5.8 million in damages following a jury's finding that Donald Trump sexually assaulted and defamed her. This ruling came from US District Judge Lewis Kaplan on Friday in Manhattan, who emphasized that it was time for Trump to fulfill his obligation to pay the judgment.
Details of the Court Ruling
Judge Kaplan's decision marks the release of funds that had been held in escrow for years. The US Supreme Court recently declined to hear Trump's appeal regarding the original verdict, which mandated a payment of $2 million for sexual assault and $3 million for defamatory statements against Carroll. The remaining $800,000 represents interest accrued over the years.
Carroll, now 82 years old, first accused Trump of assaulting her in a New York City department store in her 2019 memoir. Trump has consistently denied knowing her, labeling her claims as false and stating, "she's not my type" during a televised interview.
Trump's Ongoing Legal Battles
Despite the court's ruling, Trump's legal team has indicated their intention to continue appealing the decision. They argue that the verdict is part of a larger political conspiracy against him. A spokesperson for Trump stated, "The American people stand with President Trump as they demand an immediate end to all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded travesty of the Carroll Hoaxes."
