The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has officially lodged a complaint with the public prosecutor regarding racist messages posted on social media following the Netherlands' exit from the 2026 World Cup. The complaint was filed after the team lost to Morocco in a penalty shootout on June 29, 2026, in Monterrey, Mexico.
Response to Online Abuse of Players
Following the penalty shootout defeat, players such as Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville faced severe online abuse, particularly of a racist nature. The KNVB stated, “Unfortunately, it is never possible to be complete and to detect and arrest every racist reaction, but the KNVB wants to send a very clear signal.”
The association aims to highlight the consequences of racist behavior online, stating there are limits that should not be crossed. The KNVB has transferred these messages to law enforcement for further action.
Government Support for Legal Action
On July 3, Prime Minister Rob Jetten expressed his expectation that prosecutors would take appropriate legal actions to set a precedent. He remarked, “What happened after the round of 32 match was of course completely unacceptable.” Jetten emphasized the hypocrisy of fans who cheer for players in their national colors but turn to vitriol when they fail.
