Discord has mistakenly banned over 8,000 users for posting benign images, including chessboards and game textures, due to a bug in its safety system. The bans occurred since May 2026, following numerous reports from affected users. The platform's cofounder, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, confirmed that all users impacted have now been unbanned.
Understanding the Discord Ban Incident
According to Vishnevskiy, the bug specifically affected users who uploaded “grid-like” images, in addition to those sharing other harmless visuals. Initially, around 200 users faced bans for grid images, while the wider issue impacted a much larger group. Discord's safety system is designed to flag content by matching it against known harmful material, which can lead to false positives.
Users began reporting their bans last week, expressing confusion and frustration over the actions taken against them. Many of these individuals shared their experiences on social media, highlighting the unexpected nature of the bans for such innocuous content.
How the Bug Affected User Accounts
The glitch in Discord's system did not merely suspend accounts temporarily. Instead, it resulted in full bans, which persisted even after staff reviewed and cleared the flagged content. “When our staff reviewed and cleared those accounts, the same bug prevented the ban from being lifted automatically, so it just stayed in place,” Discord explained.
