Diego Forlán has been appointed as the interim manager of the Uruguay national football team after Marcelo Bielsa left the position following a disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup. The announcement came after a series of unsatisfactory performances from La Celeste, who were eliminated in the group stage.
Forlán's Background and Coaching Experience
Diego Forlán, a former Manchester United striker, scored 36 goals in 112 international matches and was instrumental in Uruguay's journey to the 2010 World Cup semi-finals, where he earned the Golden Boot. He retired from international football in 2014 and has since had limited coaching experience, managing Peñarol in 2020 and Atenas in 2021.
The Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) president, Ignacio Alonso, expressed confidence in Forlán's enthusiasm for the role, stating that an agreement would be finalized shortly. Forlán will lead the team until March 2027 and will also oversee the under-20 squad.
Impact of Bielsa's Tenure
Marcelo Bielsa's departure follows a tumultuous World Cup campaign where Uruguay finished with only two draws from three matches. Following the team's early exit, Bielsa accepted responsibility for the lackluster results and the atmosphere in the locker room, which reportedly faced tensions.
