Former US Olympian David 'Davey' Hearn has pleaded not guilty to charges of vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool during a court appearance on July 9, 2026. Hearn is accused of causing $1,000 in damages and faces a felony charge for destruction of property.
Details of the Vandalism Charges
Hearn, aged 67 and a three-time Olympic canoeist, was arrested last month after allegedly touching a piece of the pool's liner which had already begun to delaminate. According to the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, Hearn is accused of having ripped a piece of sealant in a deliberate act of vandalism on June 19.
During his court appearance, Hearn stated, "I didn't destroy, rip, tear, peel, or remove any part of the paint." His attorney, Norm Eisen, argued, "If Mr. Hearn can be charged with a felony for touching the Reflecting Pool, every American is at risk." Eisen emphasized that touching water should not be a criminal offense in the United States.
Background on the Reflecting Pool Renovation
The Reflecting Pool recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation, costing approximately $13 million. Despite the extensive work, which was championed by former President Donald Trump, the pool has continued to suffer from algae issues and problems with the sealant.
