Two individuals were arrested after scaling the antenna of the Empire State Building on July 1, 2026, to stage a marriage proposal. The audacious act involved unfurling a banner that read, “when the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace,” while they were filmed kissing atop the iconic New York skyscraper.
Details of the Marriage Proposal Incident
The couple, dressed in black and wearing masks, climbed to the top of the antenna, which stands at 1,454 feet (443 meters) above midtown Manhattan. News footage captured the moment the pair lingered on a narrow ledge, where one of them knelt down, seemingly to propose with a ring. After the proposal, they took selfies, showcasing what appeared to be an engagement ring.
According to police body camera footage, officers attempted to communicate with the couple, stating, “Well, you can't be up here.” The couple reportedly responded with, “We are engaged.” Following their brief celebration, police apprehended the climbers shortly after 1 p.m.
Public Reaction to the Stunt
Onlookers gathered below the Empire State Building, astonished at the spectacle. Jonathan Roman, a tourist from Glasgow, remarked, “It's crazy — it's like being in the movies.” He noted that the unexpected event was likely more thrilling than their planned visit to the observation deck.
