The inquest into the death of Maddy Cusack revealed that former Sheffield United player Nina Wilson attempted to raise concerns regarding manager Jonathan Morgan prior to the tragic event. During the hearing on Friday, Wilson expressed that she felt her warnings went unheard, highlighting a lack of support and resources within the club.
Concerns Raised by Former Players
Nina Wilson, who ended her football career at 25 due to her experiences, stated that both she and Cusack were unaware of the club’s safeguarding officer. Wilson recommended that whistleblowing procedures be made clearer for players, as well as advocating for mental health education to become a mandatory aspect of coaching qualifications.
In contrast, former assistant coach Luke Turner testified that he never witnessed Morgan bully Cusack or any other team members. He mentioned that while Morgan had a commanding presence, he did not observe any bullying behavior.
Struggles Faced by the Women's Team
The inquest also uncovered the challenges faced by the women’s team during the summer of 2023. Dr. Subhashis Basu, the team doctor at the time, revealed that staff felt under-resourced as the club transitioned from part-time to full-time status. He recounted having to manage logistics such as booking training pitches and providing meals for players.
