Jamir Nazir's short story The Serpent in the Grove has won the overall Commonwealth Short Story Prize on Friday in Cape Verde, despite widespread accusations on social media claiming it shows signs of being written by AI. Critics on platforms such as X and Bluesky pointed to 'obvious markers' of AI use in the narrative. The judging chair described the piece as 'original, poetic and deeply moving.'
Controversy Surrounding AI Authorship
The story gained significant attention after being announced as a regional winner in mid-May. Social media users have raised concerns regarding its authenticity, suggesting that it may lack the human touch typically associated with literary works.
In response to the controversy, the literary magazine Granta has decided to withdraw from its long-standing agreement to publish the Commonwealth winners. The decision reflects the growing scrutiny over AI's role in creative writing.
