In a recent interview with The Telegraph, filmmaker Christopher Nolan lauded the horror films Obsession and Backrooms, highlighting their success among young audiences. Nolan's comments came as he promoted his upcoming film, The Odyssey, which is set to explore the epic journey of Odysseus.
Nolan's Insights on Young Filmmakers
Nolan pointed to filmmakers Curry Barker and Kane Parsons as examples of the new wave of talent reshaping cinema. He stated, "I think cinema is vital and essential and continues to transform itself." He emphasized the importance of young voices in the industry, noting that they are making the medium their own.
Both films have achieved remarkable box office success, with Obsession grossing over $400 million globally on a budget of $750,000. This makes it the highest-grossing festival acquisition of all time. Backrooms, on the other hand, has surpassed $350 million globally, becoming A24's highest-grossing film in several countries.
Young Audiences and the Rejection of AI
As he discussed the evolving landscape of filmmaking, Nolan remarked on the rejection of AI-generated content by younger audiences. He explained, "I’ve never seen a more rapid wholesale dismissal of a supposedly foundational jump in technology in my lifetime." He noted that his own children, in their late teens and early 20s, view AI-generated content as inferior.
