Director Christopher Nolan addressed the backlash surrounding his adaptation of The Odyssey during an interview with The Telegraph on July 11, 2023, at the film's premiere in Mumbai, India. Nolan dismissed the online criticism regarding casting choices and the use of modern dialogue, stating that such discussions are often "irrelevant" before audiences have seen the film.
Casting Choices and Online Criticism
The adaptation of Homer's epic has sparked significant online debate, particularly regarding the casting of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as Sinon. Conservative commentator Matt Walsh criticized the casting choices on social media, which drew a response from Elon Musk, who agreed with Walsh's sentiments.
Nolan responded to such criticisms by drawing parallels to his experience with the Dark Knight trilogy, emphasizing that skepticism is common before a film's release. He stated, “You can’t worry about any of that at all. What you have to do is honour the original text by interpreting it in the strongest way you personally can.”
Modern Dialogue to Engage Audiences
Nolan has also defended the use of modern dialogue in The Odyssey, explaining that the decision was made to make the ancient story feel more relevant to contemporary audiences. In an interview with Channel 4 News, he noted, “When you look at the ancient world, people tend to view the ancient world in weird ways... What you find is something that’s really earthy, grounded and accessible.”
