Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged officials to mobilize all resources for rescue efforts after deadly storms swept through central Hubei province on Tuesday, resulting in at least 11 fatalities and over 330 injuries. The severe weather triggered evacuations and extensive rescue operations, as reported by state media.
Impact of Storms in Hubei Province
The storms, which included rare tornadoes, struck cities like Huanggang and Huangshi, leading to significant destruction. Reports indicate that severe convective weather caused damage to at least 4,855 buildings and resulted in the overturning of vehicles. One person remains missing, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by rescue teams.
Xi emphasized the need for effective disaster prevention and relief work, calling for immediate action to treat the injured and resettle affected residents. The level 13 gales on the Beaufort wind force scale have been particularly destructive, impacting communities across the region.
Flooding and Landslides in Southern China
Meanwhile, the southern provinces of Guangxi and Guangdong have raised their flood alerts to the highest level following torrential rain brought on by Typhoon Maysak. The storm has already resulted in at least two deaths and has affected approximately 55,000 residents in Nanning, where heavy rainfall breached water reservoirs.
