Charles Seliger, a unique figure in the art world, is being celebrated in a new exhibition titled Charles Seliger: The Structure of Matter, A Centennial Exhibition at Hollis Taggart. Known for his dedication to nature and Surrealist automatism, Seliger's work often goes unnoticed in discussions of Abstract Expressionism, despite his early connections to the movement.
At just 19 years old, Seliger had his first solo show at Peggy Guggenheim's gallery, The Art of This Century, in 1945. His distinct approach, which shunned large-scale works and gestural painting, set him apart from his contemporaries. Instead, Seliger focused on the beauty of nature's invisible structures and patterns, creating intricate pieces that reflect his unique vision.
