Carlos Queiroz has resigned as the head coach of the Ghana national football team following their exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His departure comes just three months after his appointment in April, culminating in a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the knockout stage on July 5, 2026.
Ghana's World Cup Performance Under Queiroz
Under Queiroz's management, Ghana finished third in Group L, securing a spot in the knockout phase after earning a win against Panama, a draw with England, and a loss to Croatia. Despite the team's advancement, Queiroz faced criticism for their tactical approach, as they scored only two goals while conceding three throughout their four matches.
Queiroz, who previously served as Manchester United's assistant manager, emphasized the need for a holistic approach to the Black Stars' future. In a statement on his social media, he expressed pride in his brief tenure, stating, "Success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana's extraordinary football talent."
Impact of Queiroz's Departure on Ghana Football
Ghana will now turn its attention to the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The team is drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia, and Somalia. This is crucial for Ghana, as they aim to return to the finals in East Africa after missing the 2025 edition, marking the first time since 2004 that the four-time champions failed to qualify.
