Sidny Lopes Cabral, a key player for Cape Verde, shared his excitement and determination ahead of their upcoming match against Argentina on Friday. The young defender, who is part of a team that has surprised many by progressing in the World Cup, spoke candidly about the pressure of facing legendary players like Lionel Messi.
Cape Verde's Underdog Spirit
With only a 1% chance of advancing according to predictions, Cape Verde defied expectations by holding Spain to a goalless draw and progressing unbeaten through the group stage. “When we saw 1%, we just laughed,” Lopes Cabral remarked, emphasizing the team's belief in their potential. The defender, who has faced challenges throughout his career, remains confident as they prepare to face the world champions.
“I always told my parents: ‘Hey, I’m going to be a great football player: I’m gonna reach the top.’ And I’m living in my dream now,” he added. Growing up in the Netherlands, Lopes Cabral has strong ties to his Cape Verdean roots, with his parents hailing from Santiago.
Facing the Giants: Messi and Argentina
As Cape Verde gears up to face Argentina, Lopes Cabral acknowledges the challenge. “If you’re like: ‘Oh, it’s Messi,’ you’re gonna lose your mind,” he stated, highlighting the need for focus on their game plan rather than individual players. “We’re a family. It’s 11 men, not this man or that man,” he explained, underscoring the unity within the team.
