Football journalist Luke Edwards and former Newcastle United owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi are embroiled in a heated exchange regarding the potential transfer of Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal. Edwards claims that Arsenal is reconsidering its interest due to a miscommunication about the player's transfer fee, initially believed to be £50 million. This dispute surfaced following Edwards’ report in The Telegraph, which detailed the circumstances surrounding the player's valuation.
Arsenal's Interest in Bruno Guimarães
According to Edwards, Arsenal's interest in the Newcastle captain only emerged when they were informed by intermediaries that Guimarães could be available for a significantly lower fee. “That is not the case and the deal remains deadlocked,” Edwards stated. Ghodoussi quickly dismissed Edwards' claims as “utter nonsense” in a social media response, prompting Edwards to defend his report.
Edwards further explained that the expectations surrounding the transfer fee were based on a conversation involving Amanda Staveley, Newcastle’s former co-owner. Staveley reportedly indicated that Newcastle would consider offers of that size if they did not qualify for the Champions League.
Ghodoussi's Response and Clarification
In response to Edwards, Ghodoussi reiterated that the claims made by Edwards were unfounded. “Which part, Mehrdad?” Edwards replied. “The £50m fee? I agree. I’m only reporting what has been claimed from their side.” This back-and-forth highlights the tension between the former owner and the journalist, as both sides present their perspectives on the situation.
