British American Tobacco (BAT) announced on Friday that it will reduce its workforce by approximately 9,000 jobs this year. This decision comes as the company aims to lower costs and enhance its operations through greater technology integration.
Job Cuts and Outsourcing Plans
The cigarette maker plans to cut about a fifth of its total workforce of 47,000 employees. Specifically, BAT will eliminate 5,500 jobs and outsource an additional 3,500 positions by the end of the year. This restructuring is part of the company’s strategy to adapt to changing market conditions and innovate its business practices.
According to BAT, these changes are necessary to push the company towards becoming more “technology enabled.” The job cuts reflect the ongoing transformation within the tobacco industry, as companies look for ways to remain competitive.
Impact on the Workforce
The decision to cut jobs will significantly impact employees across various departments. Workers are understandably concerned about job security and the future of the company. BAT has emphasized that the move is aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability.
