Bonnie Tyler, the legendary Welsh singer known for her powerful gravelly voice and iconic hits like 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', passed away at the age of 75 after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal earlier this year. Her death was confirmed by her spokesperson on July 9, 2026.
Bonnie Tyler's Early Life and Rise to Fame
Born Gaynor Hopkins in a council house in Neath, Wales, Bonnie Tyler developed a passion for music from a young age. She often carried records to her aunt's house to share with her cousins. Tyler's journey to stardom began when she was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell while performing in a Swansea club.
After years of performing in local venues, Tyler’s big break came when she recorded her first single, Lost in France, in 1976, which climbed to number nine on the UK charts. Despite her initial success, she had aspirations for a more rock-oriented sound.
Chart-Topping Career and Iconic Hits
Tyler's career took off when she released Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983, a song that would become synonymous with her name. “The first time I heard it was when [songwriter] Jim Steinman just played it on the piano in New York,” Tyler recalled. The song, originally eight minutes long, was edited down for radio and became a global sensation, spending two weeks at number one in the UK and four weeks in the US.
