Bonnie Tyler, the celebrated singer known for her hit song 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,' passed away at the age of 75 on July 8, 2023, in a hospital in Portugal due to an illness she was being treated for, according to a statement on her website.
Tyler had been in an induced coma for over a month following emergency intestinal surgery in May. After emerging from the coma, she remained in intensive care before her unexpected death.
Bonnie Tyler's Rise to Fame
Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Wales, UK, Tyler grew up in a working-class family where music was a vital part of her life. She began her career performing in local clubs in the late 1960s and gained inspiration from a talent competition in 1969, where she finished second.
Adopting the stage name Bonnie Tyler in the mid-1970s, she achieved her first major hit in 1977 with 'Lost in France,' followed by the international success of 'It's a Heartache.' Her distinctive raspy voice, a result of not resting her voice post-surgery, became her trademark and resonated with audiences around the world.
Legacy of 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'
Tyler's collaboration with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman led to the creation of 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' in 1983, a song that defined the 80s power ballad era. Originally written for a vampire-themed musical, the song's dramatic music video and grand sound secured Tyler's status as an MTV star.
