A bomb blast tore through a crowded cafe in central Damascus on July 2, 2026, killing at least nine people and wounding 22. This incident is seen as a significant security breach in the heart of the Syrian capital, attributed to ongoing tensions following the establishment of the new government.
What Happened in Damascus?
The explosion occurred at a popular cafe on al-Nasr Street in the al-Hijaz area, located approximately 100 metres from the main entrance of the Palace of Justice. According to security sources, a suspect entered the cafe, placed an improvised explosive device (IED) under a table, and exited the building. The attack appears to have been aimed at further destabilizing the region.
Emergency responders, including the commander of Internal Security in Damascus, Osama Atika, and officers from the Interior Ministry, quickly arrived at the scene to assess the damage. The cafe is frequented by lawyers, courthouse employees, and visitors, contributing to the high casualty rate due to its busy location.
Potential Perpetrators Behind the Attack
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, Maher Marwan, the governor of Damascus, indicated that “bad actors” are attempting to destabilize the nation. He promised that those responsible would be held accountable, asserting that the unity of the Syrian people would ensure the country’s resilience.
