Belgium's head coach Rudi Garcia expressed disbelief on Sunday regarding FIFA's decision to lift the suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun ahead of their round-of-16 match. Garcia remarked that he initially thought the news was an April Fool's joke, highlighting the controversy surrounding the ruling.
FIFA's Controversial Decision on Balogun
Balogun was originally suspended after receiving a red card during the United States' 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the round of 32. The red card was issued after a video review of a tackle that had not been penalized during the match. Normally, such a card results in a one-game ban, but FIFA's recent announcement allowed Balogun to play against Belgium.
Garcia stated, "I didn't know that at the World Cup, the 5th of July is actually the first of April -- it's April Fools' [Day]." He emphasized that the Belgian federation is evaluating all options in response to this unprecedented decision.
Belgium's Preparedness for the Match
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois commented on the situation, noting that the team is adapting to the unexpected news. "Had it been done earlier, we'd have been able to be mentally more prepared," Courtois mentioned, adding that they are still ready to face the U.S. team, which includes more than just Balogun.
