Behind the Rain, directed by Valeria Sarmiento, premiered at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film follows Sofía, a recent psychology graduate who returns to her hometown of Valdivia, Chile, after the discovery of a young girl's body. This event triggers painful memories of childhood sexual abuse, compelling Sofía to confront her past and its impact on her community.
Film's Artistic Approach and Themes
In this black-and-white film, Sarmiento blends stunning visuals with a heavy narrative about childhood trauma. The cinematography by Acácio de Almeida enhances the emotional weight of the story, with color introduced only at the film's conclusion. Sarmiento explains, “I knew from the very beginning that the film was going to be in black and white, except for the ending, because I grew up seeing films with no color.”
The film aims to spark societal discussions about the often-silenced issue of child abuse, as Sarmiento states, “the initial inspiration was that in our society, child abuse is sadly really common.”
Collaboration and Casting Choices
The screenplay, co-written with the late Omar Saavedra Santis, evolved through a collaborative process that brought together experienced artists. Chamila Rodríguez, a long-time collaborator of Sarmiento, plays a crucial role in the film as both actress and producer. Rodríguez shared her personal connection to the story, revealing, “I experienced something similar when I was a child.”
