The incident occurred at Elstow, where Burton’s train, operated by East Midlands Railway, struck the rear of another train. The inquest, held in Ampthill, was adjourned pending further investigations by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) and the British Transport Police.
Burton was pronounced dead at the scene at 18:49 BST. The coroner's officer noted that a consultant pathologist identified the cause of death as traumatic injuries to the brain and chest.

According to an interim report by the RAIB, Burton's train passed a red signal before the collision. Data indicated that the train was traveling at approximately 76 mph before the brakes were activated for about nine seconds, reducing speed to 49 mph at the time of impact.
