The Future of Data Centres in Sydney
In the outer western suburbs of Sydney, plans are underway for a massive 'hyperscale' data centre that could rank among the largest globally. If the project receives the necessary approvals, the 52-hectare site will feature six expansive four-storey buildings, soaring 40 metres into the sky. Additionally, it will encompass 936 cooling units and a staggering 852 diesel backup generators.
The Economic Implications
While these data centres are pivotal for supporting digital infrastructure and AI advancements, they also come with significant costs. Critics argue that the environmental toll of such facilities is substantial, especially concerning energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the operational jobs provided by these data centres are relatively few, raising concerns about their overall contribution to local economies.
