At least 10 people were killed and over 50 injured in Russian drone and missile strikes on residential buildings in Kyiv on Thursday. The attacks are reported as retaliation for recent Ukrainian offensives, according to local officials. Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, confirmed the fatalities via a post on Telegram.
Details of the Attacks in Kyiv
The strikes targeted various locations across the city, causing significant damage. Emergency crews were seen searching through the rubble of a collapsed nine-story apartment building. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, reported that 56 individuals, including two children, sustained injuries during the assaults.
In addition to the residential buildings, a hotel roof on central Shevchenko Boulevard was set ablaze due to the attacks. Klitschko noted that a ballistic missile also struck the city, causing multiple explosions throughout the night.
Broader Context of the Conflict
This wave of attacks comes after Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow earlier in the week. Ukrainian officials assert that their improved long-range drones have successfully struck deep inside Russian territory, including a major oil refinery. The ongoing conflict has seen a shift in tactics, with both sides leveraging drone technology to disrupt military operations.
