Illan Meslier is set to join Arsenal on a free transfer after departing Leeds United last week. The French goalkeeper, who was once the first-choice at Leeds, is expected to take on the role of third-choice keeper at Arsenal, allowing 20-year-old Tommy Setford to go out on loan. This move comes as uncertainty surrounds Kepa Arrizabalaga's future with the club.
Meslier's Career at Leeds United
Meslier spent seven seasons at Elland Road, becoming a key player during his tenure. He was Leeds' first-choice goalkeeper for five years but lost his position to Karl Darlow at the end of the 2024-25 season. Last season, he did not make any appearances, falling to third choice behind Darlow and Lucas Perri, following a series of errors that impacted his standing in the team.
Current Goalkeeping Situation at Arsenal
With the arrival of Meslier, Arsenal's goalkeeping situation is evolving. As it stands, Kepa Arrizabalaga remains as the back-up to David Raya. However, Kepa has expressed an openness to becoming a No. 1 keeper if the right opportunity arises. “Kepa is in no rush to leave, but if something suitable comes along that works professionally for him and personally for his family, he may consider it,” according to Sky Sports News.
